Sligo General Hospital
Acute hospital services in the region are provided from:
Sligo General Hospital, just 27 miles away. It has 323 general in-patient beds with a regional Rheumatology service based at Our Lady’s Hospital Manorhamilton (21 beds).
The mainstream acute services provided locally cover the following specialties:
Anaesthesia, Cardiology, Diabetology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, ENT,
Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Medicine, Microbiology, Nephrology, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Oral and Maxillofacial, Orthodontics, Paediatrics, Palliative Medicine, Pathology, Radiology, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Surgery.
Consultant Services in Immunology and Radiation Oncology are provided via University College Hospital, Galway with additional consultant radiation oncology services provided from St Luke’s Hospital, Dublin.
A full range of clinical and non-clinical support services are provided in Sligo General Hospital, including Theatres, CSSD, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Medical Records, Social Work and Therapies.
Services are structured on a regional basis with support provided to Letterkenny General Hospital in respect of ENT, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology Services. Outpatient clinics are also provided at community hospitals.
Shiel Hospital
The Shiel Hospital was endowed under the terms of the will of Dr. Simon Sheil (jnr.) who lived and worked as a doctor in the town until his death, in 1889. Since then, the hospital has formed an integral part of the local community. The Shiel Hospital is a community Hospital under the Management of the Health Service Executive, North West Area, offering a wide range of services to the local community extending from Laghey to Kinlough and Tullaghan.
There are 47 inpatient beds and a Day Hospital. A full range of community services and outpatient clinics are provided. Medical cover for the hospital is provided by the local G.P.’s in Bayview practice. The hospital also has an x-Ray Department which is open from Monday to Friday from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. For further information you can contact the Sheil Hospital at 071/98 51300.
